SEO 101: Creating The Best Meta Description

Meta descriptions are a type of meta tag which form an integral part of any site’s modern SEO strategy. Each page on a site requires an optimised meta description in order to perform best in search engine ranking results. In this edition of SEO 101 the WorkDash team will be taking you through how to create the best meta description for your website.

What Are Meta Descriptions and Why Are They Important?

Meta descriptions act as a short description of your page to both search engine users and search engine crawler bots. You can see meta descriptions below the page title in search engine ranking results.

There are two reasons why meta descriptions are so important. Firstly, they are used by search engine crawler bots to determine what your page is about. This is why it is crucial to accurately describe the page and include the relevant keywords for your site. Secondly, meta descriptions are visible to users on search engines. Without an optimised meta description, search engines will automatically create one for your site which is almost always a random collection of words. This is not a great look for your site! This is why having an optimised meta description is important!

What Is The Perfect Meta Description Length?

Meta description length guidelines are similar across all major search engines. Meta descriptions should not exceed 160 characters in length. Doing so can risk search engine penalties and suppression, which impacts the performance of your site in search engine rankings. It can also result in improper display to search engine users, which impacts your conversion rate and brand identity.

In addition to the max length guideline, meta descriptions should also not be below 70 characters in length. Similarly to the 160 character max length, meta descriptions below 70 characters can risk improper display in search and suppressed ranking results.

How Do You Add A Meta Description To A Website Page?

Each CMS platform has its own method of adding a meta description to a website page. For website builder CMS platforms like Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy and Shopify you will be able to use the built-in SEO snippet features to add or edit your page titles.

WordPress does not feature a built-in SEO system so you will need to use a third-party SEO plugin like Yoast SEO or Rank Math.
