Welcome to the WorkDash SEO 101 blog series. In this blog series we will be breaking down some of the foundational SEO elements that you need to know about to rank your site effectively in search engines. This article will cover everything you need to know about page titles including why page titles are important, what the perfect page title length is and how you can add a page title to the pages on your website.
What Are Page Titles? Why Are They Important?
Page titles are one of the most important meta tag elements on your site. Essentially, they communicate crucial information about your site to search engine crawler bots. This information is then used to determine how your site should be positioned in search ranking results. If your page title doesn’t include the right information your website may not appear when your potential customers are looking for you!
Another reason why page titles are so important is they are visible in ranking results. They are the blue or pink hyperlink text you can see when making a search on Google. This is often your site’s first impression so it is important to make it a good one!
What Is The Perfect Page Title Length?
Fortunately, all major search engines share similar guidelines as to how long a page title should be for maximum effectiveness. Page titles should be no shorter than 30 characters and no longer than 60 characters. Ensuring that your page title is within this length guideline will help to make sure your site is set up to perform best in search engine ranking results. Page titles which do not fit this length guideline will either suffer from improper display in search engine ranking results or experience suppressed performance in search engines.
How Many Keywords Should Be In A Page Title?
Due to the short length of page titles it can be difficult to include a number of keywords. For best SEO formatting your page title should include the relevant name of the page you are optimising (about us, contact). If you have space leftover then you should include the best keyword for your site.
How Do You Add A Page Title To A Page?
This depends entirely on the CMS you are using. When adding a page title to WordPress you will need to use a third-party plugin as there is no default page title feature available. For website builder CMS platforms like Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy and Shopify you will be able to use the built-in SEO snippet features to add or edit your page titles.
